            <para>This dataset was collected as part of a project investigating the requirements of ‘Alluvial forests with Alnus glutinosa and Fraxinus excelsior (Alno-Padion, Alnion)’ habitats in Flanders, partly to inform management, restoration and the assessment of development opportunities of/for such habitats. </para><para>This research was carried out by INBO under its previous name (the Institute for Nature Conservation, in Dutch ‘het Instituut voor Natuurbehoud’), on behalf of the province of East Flanders (provincie Oost-Vlaanderen).</para><para> In the data, under 'Occurrence remarks', the vegetation layer code is noted. The transect code is noted under 'Event remarks'. Although abiotic data was collected during this project, only vegetation data is presented here. Details of the sampling protocol, including the vegetation layer codes, are given in the associated report: De Becker, P., Jochems, H., &amp; Huybrechts, W. (2004). Onderzoek naar de abiotische standplaatsvereisten van verschillende beekbegeleidende alno-padion &amp; Alnion incanae-gemeenschappen. (Verslag van het Instituut voor Natuurbehoud; Vol. 17). All data was collected by trained experts.</para><para>The data is being exported from INBOVEG, the INBO vegetation record database (also part of the "Global Index of Vegetation-plot databases" and the "European Vegetation Archive"). This GBIF dataset is the same as the data in INBOVeg. The relevant identification code is 'IV2013122411061887'. It has been previously published on GBIF as part of the FLORABANK1 bulkdata publication (https://doi.org/10.3897/phytokeys.12.2849) at either a 1 km² or a 4 km² scale; here, it is published with specific locations (with 30m² uncertainty). No coordinate uncertainty was noted in the accompanying report, so 30m² is only an estimate. The coordinates were originally recorded in the Belgian Lambert system, but they are given here as WGS84 coordinates.</para><para> </para><para>To allow anyone to use this dataset, we have released the data to the public domain under a Creative Commons Attribution waiver (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/).                 <para>This research project aimed to gain an understanding of the site requirements of stream-associated forests belonging to the Alder-Bird Cherry and Alder communities, in Flanders/East Flanders, and to translate these 
insights into a tool that can be used when making decisions regarding nature conservation objectives and the planning/management of nature reserves. 
To investigate the site requirements of stream-associated forests, combined data are required on the site characteristics and the occurrence of the forest type and its typical plant species. The combined site and vegetation data make it possible to establish quantitative relationships between site requirements and the occurrence of the forest types. This leads to a decision-making tool capable of assessing the likelihood of occurrence of these different forest types. The relationships identified make it possible to assess the potential for the development of the studied forest types in disturbed, less well-developed forests or in current agricultural areas. This concerns only the potential as determined by the abiotic environment. </para>

                    <descriptorValue>In reference areas, where well-developed stream-associated forest types are found, basic data were collected to establish the site requirements of the forest types under study. This involves a total of 30 areas with 122 measurement points, for a total of 172 surveys. The existing literature at the time indicate that the main site factors for stream-associated forests related to soil texture, soil chemistry, groundwater composition and groundwater levels. For all measurement points in the reference areas, these abiotic data were linked to vegetation surveys. Together, they formed the basic data used to determine the defining site characteristics.
The vegetation surveys – 172 in total – were analysed using a number of statistical techniques.
Five more or less ‘pure’o forest types are distinguished. These corresponded to the typology of stream-associated forest types within the related Alno-Padion and Alnion communities being studied. The various forest types are discussed in detail in the associated report, both in terms of vegetation aspects and their distribution. </descriptorValue>
