Descrição

The “Occurrences from the Alien CSI Bioblitz: citizen science to engage society in invasive species monitoring” dataset is an occurrence dataset published by the Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO) in collaboration with the AlienCSI COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology, CA17122) research network (Roy et al. 2018). The dataset contains all the alien species data collected during the Alien CSI Bioblitz. This bioblitz was organized for the first time in May 2022 as a three day event and is planned to be repeated yearly. This bioblitz activity aims to engage society in invasive species monitoring. The first edition included guided bioblitzes in thirteen different protected areas across twelve European countries. The data are published as a standardized Darwin Core Archive. Issues with the dataset can be reported at https://github.com/alien-csi/bioblitz-occurrences/issues

We have released this dataset to the public domain under a Creative Commons Public Domain Dedication. We would appreciate it if you follow the INBO norms for data use (https://www.inbo.be/en/norms-data-use) when using the data. If you have any questions regarding this dataset, don't hesitate to contact us via the contact information provided in the metadata.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Métodos de Amostragem

The AlienCSI bioblitz represents a place-based bioblitz of varying duration (but within one weekend) and with a varying number of participants. Target groups include experts as well as the general public, naturalists etc. The activity aims to yield data on target species in the areas and to increase awareness with participants on the alien species and their impacts on nature. It is a targeted event that considers alien species, although native species are also recorded. Observers typically use different smartphone apps for recording, including iNaturalist, Obsmapp, RedEXOS or the Invasive Alien Species Europe app (Joint Research Centre).

Área de Estudo The Bioblitz has a focus on alien species in protected areas across Europe and the Canary Islands.
Controle de Qualidade The different organizers had varied quality control systems, see Adriaens et al. 2021 for an overview.

Descrição dos passos do método:

  1. The source data for this standardized occurrence dataset is a Google spreadsheet, maintained by the Research Institute of Nature and Forest (INBO) and updated yearly.
  2. The data was downloaded as a csv file and uploaded to the Github repository (https://github.com/alien-csi/bioblitz-occurrences/tree/main/data/raw).
  3. We developed a RMarkdown script to document and perform the transformation of the data to Darwin Core.
