The general objective of the HABISTAT project was to develop a conceptual framework for an operation-oriented methodology to map, monitor and evaluate vegetation and habitat types from remote sensing imagery, and to apply this framework to the habitats of some specific heathland areas in the Atlantic part of Belgium and the Netherlands. See page 35 onwards of the report 'Haest et al., 2011'. Much of the surveying work fell under Work Packages 3100: Field Work, 3200: Data Labelling and 5200: Validation. The objective of WP-3100 was to acquire the field data necessary for the training, testing and validation of the classification methodologies, as well as to further enhance insights into approaching conservation status assessment from a remote sensing point-of-view. WP-5200 had the aim to design a validation sampling strategy and field protocol to enable a statistically sound assessment of the obtained results for the vegetation/land cover maps, as well as the determination of habitat patch types and quality estimates.

| 研究區域描述 | WP3100 Field Work Fieldwork was carried out in three areas: the Kalmthoutse Heide (BE) (which included the Kalmthoutse Heide s.s., and the northern part of the nearby military area Klein Schietveld), Ginkelse and Eder Heide (also including Wekeromse Zand) (NL), and the Dijle valley (BE). For the Kalmthoutse Heide, two extensive field datasets were generated: (1) a dedicated dataset of sample points comprising carefully selected, targeted vegetation types. Collected in 2007 (with limited additions from 2006 and 2008). (2) a stratified random dataset of sample points, comprising both typical targeted vegetation types and all possible transitions. Collected in 2009. For the Ginkelse and Eder Heide, a database of the vegetation composition was collected in a similar way as on the Kalmthoutse Heide, and field spectra of vegetation types and reference sites were collected. |
| 研究設計描述 | In order to achieve high classification accuracies in this project, we adopted a protocol for the collection of in-situ observations that is able to link both the field and the remote sensing approaches for looking at vegetation. This protocol is largely based on the BioHab-methodology, a common method for the surveillance and monitoring of habitats in the whole of Europe, developed within a project of the EU 5th Framework Programme. Please see Annex C.3. Detailed report on field work, performed in 2009. in the associated report (Haest, B., Vanden Borre, J., Spanhove, T., Thoonen, G., Delalieux, S., Kooistra, L., Schmidt, A., Ma, J., C.-W.
