Description

This data was collected during research into the variation in (Flemish) species-rich grasslands and their ecological processes. Plant species and abundance/cover estimates were made for 3 x 3 m plots across Flanders. The data has been stored in INBOVEG, the INBO vegetation record database (also part of the "Global Index of Vegetation-plot databases" and the "European Vegetation Archive") and is being published here in its entirety. The GBIF dataset is the same as the data in INBOVeg. The relevant identification code is 'IV2014052710445929'. In the data, under 'Occurrence remarks', the vegetation layer code is noted. No coordinate uncertainty was noted in the accompanying report, so 30m² is only an estimate. The coordinates were originally recorded in the Belgian Lambert system, but they are given here as WGS84 coordinates.Details of the sampling protocol, including the vegetation layer codes, are given in the associated report: Demolder, H., Adams, Y., & Paelinckx, D. (2003). Typologie en beheer van soortenrijke cultuurgraslanden. (Rapporten van het instituut voor natuurbehoud; No. 2003.01). Instituut voor Natuurbehoud. All data was recorded by trained experts. This research was carried out by INBO under its previous name (the Institute for Nature Conservation, in Dutch ‘het Instituut voor Natuurbehoud’), on behalf of the Flemish governmental Programme of policy-focused research ("Programma Beleidsgericht Onderzoek: PBO-project 98/39/57 “Visie voor behoud en herstel van graslanden met natuurwaarden”").

Données sur le projet

The study aimed to help to fill the gaps in knowledge about the variation in species-rich grasslands, as well as the ecological processes that underlie their diversity. In this context, it was necessary to gain a clear insight into the typology of species-rich grasslands and into the factors and processes that influence the quality of each type. The associated report (Demolder et al., 2003), discusses a typology of species-rich grasslands in Flanders. It concerns the final research project in a series of three, carried out within the scope of the PBOproject ‘A view for conservation and restoration of grasslands with natural values’. The first research project aimed to increase our understanding of the agricultural value of species-rich grasslands. In the second project, the possibilities of combining nature and agriculture for species-rich grasslands were investigated (see bibliography). To set up the typology, vegetation relevés were made throughout Flanders. Twinspan-analysis and ordination was used to determine a total of 10 grassland types were determined. A soil map and data concerning area’s liable to floods was used to explore the soil characteristics of the different types. To determine the share of groundwater-dependent plant species, Londo’s list of phreatophytes was used. To examine to what extent the types were characterised by species of nitrogen-poor and acid soils, Ellenberg’s indicator values for nutrients and acidity were used. Suggestions in connection with management of the different types were based on the share of the different indicator values for mowing, as well as literature data. GIS maps were used to determine the location of the types with regard to ecoregions and country-planning schemes. Information on fertilisation restrictions and land use were analysed too. Only the vegetation survey data is included in this GBIF publication.

Financement This research was carried out by INBO under its previous name (the Institute for Nature Conservation, in Dutch ‘het Instituut voor Natuurbehoud’), on behalf of the Flemish governmental Programme of policy-focused research ("Programma Beleidsgericht Onderzoek: PBO-project 98/39/57 “Visie voor behoud en herstel van graslanden met natuurwaarden”").
Description du domaine détude / de recherche During two field seasons (May and June 2000 and 2001), 362 vegetation surveys were carried out. The vegetation surveys are located as precisely as possible within the grassland plot on a 1:10,000 scale map (see De Molder et al., 2003). No coordinate uncertainty was noted in the accompanying report, so 30m² is only an estimate. The coordinates were originally recorded in the Belgian Lambert system, but they are given here as WGS84 coordinates. Data from the West Flemish part of the ‘Coastal and Scheldt Polders’ ecoregion was derived from images of species-rich cultivated grasslands made available by A. Zwaenepoel. These surveys were not conducted at random, but were more targeted, amongst other things, within the framework of the “Systematics of habitat types for grassland biotopes” (Zwaenepoel 2002)), as part of the process of identifying compensation areas for the Regional Plan amendment concerning the inner harbour of Zeebrugge and nature restoration projects (including Fort Isabella). From this set of surveys, 154 surveys were selected and used in the further analysis and the development of the typology.
Description du design Sample plots were 3 m x 3 m (following Schaminée 1995, and den Held & den Held, 1985). For each plot, the plant species present within the plot and a combined estimate of the abundance/cover of each species was recorded. Cover was defined as the percentage of the sampling area occupied by the horizontal projection of all living parts of a species. The estimates are made using a modified Londo scale, following Schaminée 1995. Cover below 5% are supplemented with estimates of the abundance. Abundance represents the number of individuals of a species, following den Held & den Held, 1985. A. Zwaenepoel also used Londo’s scale, but the sample plot size of the surveys was often different from ours. These were mostly narrow, rectangular transects 25 m or 50 m long and 1 m wide. These dimensions were chosen primarily to sample specific vegetation types (silverweed community, saline vegetation, etc.) which are often found along steep edges between meadows and ditches and other plot boundaries. Where information was available, these surveys were also located on the 1:10,000 map and entered into the GIS. For 39 surveys, no exact location was available.
