Description

This dataset was collected as part of an experiment looking at the effect of the "sinus" method (meandering mowing) on pollinator and habitat diversity in mesic grasslands. Part of this data is stored in INBOVEG, the INBO vegetation record database (also part of the "Global Index of Vegetation-plot databases" and the "European Vegetation Archive"). The relevant identification code for the INBOVeg dataset is 'IV2015020509212244'. The 'collectionCode' column in the data also identifies the data from INBOVeg versus the data held by INBO outside of this databank.Looking at these effects included species surveys, carried out yearly (2018, 2019, 2020 & 2021), during the flight season of pollinators (mid April - late September). The pollinator records are not present in this dataset, only the plant survey results.Under 'occurrence remarks', the distance of the organism from the point of measuring is given, where noted. A value of 0 is a distance of 0, if no distance was noted then the field will read 'NULL'.  More details regarding the surveying protocols is given later, though a full overview (along with the results of the experiment itself) can be found in the article: Parmentier, L., Kerckvoorde, A. Données sur le projet

In this study we report on the effects of sinus management over three consecutive years (2019–2021), with a focus on pollinators, bees and butterflies, as test organisms. These two arthropod groups are considered important because of their numerous presence in grasslands, their trophic level (including relevance of ecosystem services as pollination) and cultural significance (Garibaldi et al., 2013; Woodcock et al., 2021). We investigated the following key research questions: • How management impacts annual accumulation of abundance and alpha diversity metrics for all pollinators, as well as for bee and butterfly subgroups; • The impact of management on pollinator diversity over three consecutive years, focusing on pollinator subgroups categorized by functional diversity and rarity; • How management influences flowering plant abundance and plantpollinator interactions, of bees and butterflies. Through this research, we aim to address a topical issue, relevant for policymakers shaping future biodiversity conservation measures of grassland ecosystems in rural landscapes across European countries and beyond.

Méthodes déchantillonnage

Please see the associated article by Parmentier et al., 2025, for full details of the surveying protocol. The survey was carried out using a 'point, plant, distance' process. All of the plants observed were within 0.5 m of the sampling point. Under the field 'occurrence Remarks', the distance of the observed organism from the observation point was recorded. A value of '0' means a distance of 0 metres, if no distance was recorded then the field will contain a value of 'NULL'.
