Description
This first checklist of Tipuloidea of Martinique in largely based on specimens collected during an expedition in the Réserve Biologique Intégrale (RBI) des Pitons du Carbet in January-February 2018, where crane flies appeared to be by far the most abundant Diptera in the pan traps employed. This survey revealed the presence of 26 species of Limoniidae, including one new species in each of the genera Teucholabis Osten Sacken, 1860, Atypophthalmus Brunetti, 1911 and Rhipidia Meigen, 1818. Female specimens of seven other species have not yet been identified to the species level. This inventory, “Dolichopodid survey of Martinique (Diptera: Dolichopodidae)”, consisted of two consecutive parts: (i) a two weeks inventory of the RBI Pitons du Carbet (19/1-4/2/2018) and (ii) a one week survey of mainly coastal sites in the south of the island (5-13/2/2018). Pollet et al. (2018) provide a detailed description of the sampling methods and areas visited. Seven of the eight locations within the RBI des Pitons du Carbet selected for sampling, and pan traps were installed during 22-27 January (both sites at Gros-Morne are considered one location). An 8th location (Plateau Boucher) adjacent to the RBI was added on 2 February. In all but one location, one principal and two supplementary sites were in place for pan trapping. In the principal sites, 10 units of one blue, yellow and white trap were in operation (i.e., a total of 30 traps), whereas only 10 yellow pan traps were employed in supplementary sites. All traps in the RBI were operational at soil surface level and fixed with metal pins; formalin solution (5%) with detergent was used as fixative. At each site, sampling lasted for one full week. A total of 389 pan traps were used in and near the RBI des Pitons du Carbet, and another 72 beyond that area. In addition, the set of samples gathered by Eddy Dumbardon-Martial in the RBI des Pitons du Carbet during a preceding survey (“Etude de la faune entomologique et d’autres invertébrés de la RBI des Pitons du Carbet (Martinique”) in 2016-2017 was also examined, resulting in the discovery of Zelandotipula gelhausi sp. nov. (Tipulidae). Pollet, M., Dumbardon-Martial, E. Maréchal, P. (2018) Dolichopodid survey of Martinique (Diptera: Dolichopodidae). Fly Times 60: 4-12.

Title | Dolichopodid survey of Martinique (Diptera: Dolichopodidae) |
---|---|
Funding | DEAL Martinique, ONF Martinique, Collectivité territoriale de Martinique and Parc naturel de Martinique funded the program “Etude de la faune entomologique et d’autres invertébrés de la RBI des Pitons du Carbet (Martinique)”. This expedition was organized during 2014-2018 by Dr Patrick Maréchal of the Institut Carabéen pour la Nature et la Culture (ICNC, Martinique). Marc Pollet was financially supported by the ICNC and the Leopold III Fund (Brussels, Belgium) during his “Dipterological survey of Mar-tinique (Diptera: Dolichopodidae)” during January 2018 |
Study Area Description | Martinique is situated between the islands of Dominica in the north and Saint Lucia in the south. It measures 75 by 30 km and has an area of about 1.080 square km. The north is dominated by the steep volcanic mountain of Mont Pelée (up till 1.397 m a.s.l.) and the Pitons du Carbet (1.197 m a.s.l.). The Réserve Biologique Intégrale (RBI) des Pitons du Carbet is situated in the central part of northern Martinique and covers 12.400 ha. It comprises a mountain range with 5 peaks (‘pitons’) as well as about 10 smaller hills (‘mornes’). It is the most extensive montane forest area on the island and ranges in altitude between 174 and 1.197 m a.s.l. The area is strongly cut through by numerous rivers and streams born at higher altitudes. Rainfall is frequent and strong, especially on the summit of the Pitons. The RBI Pitons du Carbet was the focus of both expeditions. In addition to the 2018 survey, also inland sites in the capital Fort-de-France and coastal sites in the south of the island were investigated (see also Description Basic Metadata). |
Design Description | Pollet et al. (2018) provide a detailed description of the sampling methods and areas visited. Eight locations within the RBI des Pitons du Carbet were selected for sampling. In seven locations, pan traps were installed during 22-27 January 2018 (both sites at Gros-Morne are considered one location). Blue, yellow and white pan traps were also applied in various numbers in sites beyond the RBI, i.e., Fort-de-France (19/1-4/2/2018) and Petite Anse (5-13/2/2018). In addition, in all sites, Diptera were also collected with sweep nets, with a focus on Dolichopodidae. Pollet, M., Dumbardon-Martial, E. Maréchal, P. Sampling Methods
During the 2018 expedition, the main collecting methods were coloured pan traps and sweep nets. In 2016-2017, also Malaise traps were in operation. See also Design Description (Project Data).
Study Extent | The study area in Martinique roughly contained three different areas: - the Réserve Biologique Intégrale (RBI) des Pitons du Carbet (focus of the survey) - Fort-de-France (capital, several sites) - south of the island (several sites) See also Study Area Description (Project Data). |
---|
Method step description:
- After being collected (mainly with pan traps), per site insect yields of pan traps of the same colour were pooled into one sample that was stored in 70% alcohol in a whirlpak. Specimens collected with sweep nets were also stored in 70% alcohol solution in vials of 2 ml or 5 ml. During the subsequent processing of these samples, Marc Pollet separated the Tipuloidea (and other Diptera fractions) and provided this fraction to Jorge Mederos for identification. Pjotr Oosterbroeck contributed to the verification of these identifications. Finally, specimens were separated from the bulk to be deposited in the collections mentioned under "Collection Data".
