Descrição

This research was carried out by INBO under its previous name (the Institute for Nature Conservation, in Dutch ‘het Instituut voor Natuurbehoud’), to provide an overview of the flora and vegetation in the alluvial areas within the dykes of the Upper Zeeschelde. 20 areas were inventoried. This data comes from INBOVEG, the INBO vegetation record database (also part of the "Global Index of Vegetation-plot databases" and the "European Vegetation Archive"). The GBIF dataset is the same as the data in INBOVeg. The relevant identification code is 'IV2014062312153090'. This dataset has been previously published on GBIF as part of the FLORABANK1 bulkdata publication (https://doi.org/10.3897/phytokeys.12.2849) at either a 1 km² or a 4 km² scale, here it is published with specific locations (with 17.5m² uncertainty). No coordinate uncertainty was noted in the report, so this is an estimate based on the plot sizes. In the data, under 'Occurrence remarks', the vegetation layer is noted. All records were collected by trained experts. Details of the sampling protocol are given in the associated report: Van Den Balck, E., Hoffmann, M., & Meire, P. (1998).

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Dados Sobre o Projeto

The objectives of the study were: - to inventory the flora in the study areas; - to characterise the vegetation of the (potential) floodplains within the dykes that fell under the Sigmaplan; - to investigate which ecological factors determine the differences in vegetation types; - to evaluate changes in vegetation (types) within the study area. For more details, please see the associated report: Van Den Balck, E., Hoffmann, M., & Meire, P. (1998). De terrestrische flora en vegetatie van het niet-getijbeïnvloede deel van het alluvium van de Zeeschelde. (Rapporten van het instituut voor natuurbehoud; Vol. 10). Instituut voor Natuurbehoud.

Título The terrestrial flora and vegetation of the non-tidal part of the Zeeschelde alluvial plain
Descrição da Área de Estudo The study area comprises the alluvial plain situated on the inland side of the dykes of the Zeeschelde between Ghent and Kruibeke, as well as the alluvial areas along the Dunne (as far as Lokeren) and the Rupel (as far as Rumst). Twenty areas were inventoried. For each vegetation type (mapping unit, according to the Biological Value Map (BWK) of the time), at least three plots were selected. The choice of plot locations was arbitrary.
Descrição do Design From the middle of the plot, an estimate of the homogeneity of the vegetation in the plot was recorded, following the French-Swiss scale. Whilst surveying the plot, all species present were recorded. Species found on the banks of ditches were also recorded, if these species were wholly or partly within the plot. If different vegetation types (differing from the BWK mapping units) were found in the field, these were also included. A total of 293 plots were surveyed. Grassland survey plots covered an area of 9 m² (3 m × 3 m), whilst those for forests and plantations covered 100 m² (100 m × 100 m). The size of these survey plots corresponds to the minimum area of the communities in question. When surveying ditch and bank vegetation, a width of 0.5 metres was always maintained; the length was determined based on the uniformity of the vegetation. In the field, the management type was recorded, as well as the relative cover of the moss, herb, shrub and tree layers. A total of 293 surveys were carried out across the entire study area.
