Description
Invasive plants in Luronium natans habitats in Flanders, Belgium is a sampling event dataset published by the Research Institute of Nature and Forest (INBO). This dataset contains invasive aquatic plants collected during a Luronium natans survey. Here it is published as a standardized Darwin Core Archive and includes for each sampling event an eventID, date, location and sampling protocol (in the event core) and for each occurrence an occurrenceID, the number of recorded individuals, status (present/absent) and scientific name (in the occurrence extension). Issues with the dataset can be reported at https://github.com/inbo/data-publication/issues
We have released this dataset to the public domain under a Creative Commons Zero waiver. We would appreciate it if you follow the GBIF citation guidelines (https://www.gbif.org/citation-guidelines) when using the data. If you have any questions regarding this dataset, don't hesitate to contact us via the contact information provided in the metadata or via https://twitter.com/trias_project.
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 472 records.
1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data
A survey of Luronium natans was carried out in Flanders to determine the habitat requirements of this rare species. This species is protected by the Natura 2000 Habitats Directive (Annex 2). This survey is continued by the monitoring of the distribution and quality of this species for the article 17 reporting of the EU Habitats Directive. During field work for this project, also invasive macrophytes were recorded.

Study Area Description | Flanders, Belgium |
Design Description | As Luronium natans has a restricted distribution, monitoring is carried out on all known populations in Flanders. Also, some recently disappeared sites and some locations with supposed presence of Luronium natans are included. Data collection is based on a protocol (Van Landuyt, 2014) and includes data collection to determine the local conservation status of Luronium natans (Lommaert et al., 2014 of 2015 of 2020). |
The personnel involved in the project:
Sampling Methods
Vegetation recording is carried out during june-september for each site on different levels: * waterbody level: description of the waterbody, presence of macrophyte taxa in the waterbody * population of Luronium natans (data not provided) * permanent quadrant of 1 square meter in an abundant patch of Luronium natans (only recorded in 2008 & 2009; taxon occurrence and plot data (Braun Blanquet)
Study Extent | Luronium natans is an amphibic species, present in both lentic and lotic waterbodies. Its actual range is restricted to the north-eastern part of Flanders. The publication occurrences of exotic aquatic plants in Luronim natans habitats will serve the monitoring of alien invasive species in Belgium. (TrIAS project) |

Quality Control | Data are collected by professionals ensuring the quality of the records. |
Method step description:
- Data are collected in the field by specialized personnel.
- A custom SQL view is created in the NBN database to map the original data to Darwin Core as an event core and occurrence extension.
- The Darwin Core views are connected to the INBO IPT and documented with metadata.
- The dataset is published and registered with GBIF.

Additional Metadata
Purpose | The dataset was published within the framework of the TrIAS project (Tracking Invasive Alien Species, Vanderhoeven et al. 2017 - http://trias-project.be) .The aim of TrIAS is to establish an open data framework to follow the progression of exotic species, identify emerging species, assess the risk and inform the IAS policies. |
